Invasion Description

1st Record: St. Augustine [just S of the Bridge of Lions west bank]/FL/Matanzas River in (Intercoastal Waterway) (Attached to the running gear of a boat docked in St. Augustine and hauled out in Jacksonville, the boat bottom had been painted in May 2006; USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Program 2006). By 2007, populations were established, in the Intracoastal Waterway around St. Augustine with settlement occurring in March-August. Settlement did not occur in adjacent creeks, probably because of lower salinity (Gilg et al. 2010). Sharp declines in M. coccopoma abundance in the St. Augustine area were seen after severe winters in 2010 and 2011; however, populations are expected to be resilient (Matthew Gilg, cited by Edwards 2011). Populations recovered, in 2011-2012, reaching maximum densities of 0.1-1 barnacles . cm-2 (Crickenberger and Moran 2013)
