Invasion
Invasion Description
1st Introduced Record: Lee County/FL/Estero Bay (1952, FLMNH 53673, Florida Museum of Natural History 2009)
Native Range- Guatemala to Missisippi River (north to southern Illinois and Ohio) in coastal and inland fresh waters, and as an irregular migrant to estuaries and coastal waters (Page and Burr 1991).
Introduced Range- It may have been introduced to Gulf drainages east of the Mississippi River, and to the Florida peninsula in the first half of the 20th century (Fuller et al. 1999; Center for Aquatic Resource Studies 2009). The earliest Florida Museum of Natural History record from the peninsula appears to be from the St. Johns River in 1931 (FLMNH 453, Florida Museum of Natural History 2009). Collections from southern Florida begin in the 1950s. Howver, there is an undated record colleced by Edward Drinker Cope (died 1897, identification by H. W. Fowler) from Voulsia County, Florda, probably from the St. Johns River. Consequently, we consider this species cryptopgenic in the eastern gulf drainage and all of Florida.
