European Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is a flounder, ranging through the Northeast Atlantic, from Norway to the Mediterranean, with a subspecies, S. m. maeoticus in the Black Sea. The turbot is a highly prized food-fish. At least 5 attempts were made to introduce European Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) and European Sole (Solea solea) to the East coast of the US (Smith 1907). In the first, in 1878, 2 turbot survived the voyage and were released outside Boston Harbor. No fish survived the second attempt. In the third, in 1880, 5 sole were released off Sandy Hook. The fourth attempt involved a small number of fish in poor condition (6 S. maximus and 3 S. solea), which were released in Sheepshead Bay, Long Island, New York (Baird 1884). At this time, it was difficult to keep large numbers of fishes in healthy a trans-Atlantic voyage
