Megamelus scutellaris (Waterhyacinth Planthopper) is a small (2.9-3.4 mm) insect native to South America, which is a specialized feeder on the invasive floating plant Water Hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes). It sucks fluid from the leaves, and when abundant, can produce extensive damage to the leaves. It does not feed on related plants, such as Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata). Megamelus scutellaris was selected as a potential biocontrol insect, and released and became established at multiple sites in Florida in 2011-2012, including the St. Johns River. It has been released in Mississippi, Louisiana, and California. Megamelus scutellaris was released in the San Francisco Bay Delta, but became established only at one pond in Folsom, outside the Delta. However, the leafhopper could spread downstream and colonize the Delta. This insect has both macropterous (long-winged, flying) and brachypterous short-winged (non-flying) female morphs.
