Invasion Description

The southernmost range and abundance of Callinectes sapidus may have been expanded by the invasion of the Asian mussel Limnoperna fortunei, now an abundant estuarine and freshwater food source (Cesar et al. 2003).

Alagoas to Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil/Atlantic Ocean (de Almeida et al. 2008); Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil/Lagoa Dos Patos, Estuary Rio Grande (USNM 256111, US National Museum of Natural History 2007); Argentina/Quequén River (38±320S 58±420W) (Boschi 1964, cited by Cesar et al. 2003); Canal Honda, Abra Vieja and Canal A, Arroyo Nicolini (Tigre), San Isidros’s shore (inner Rio de la Plata), Punta Lara, Atalaya (middle Rio de la Plata), El Pescado Stream (at the intersection of Provincial Road N± 11) and San Clemente del Tuyú (outer Rio de la Plata)/Argentina/Rio de la Plata (2002, Rio de la Plata, Cesar et al. 2002).
