Invasion Description

1st Records: Victoria/Port Philip Bay (Hilbish et al. 2000, southern genotype); Melbourne/Victoria/Port Philip Bay (1994-2010, Westfall and Gardner 2010, 37° 53.532' S 144° 54.910', hybrids northern M. galloprovincialis X M. edulis); Victoria/Womboyn River (1994-2010, Westfall and Gardner 2010, 37° 15.033' S 149° 57.556' E, northern M. galloprovincialis X M. edulis)

Genetic studies of Mytilus mussels in the Southern Hemisphere indicate that they include a Southern Hemisphere genotype of M. galloprovinicalis derived from pre-human natural dispersal, recently introduced Northern Hemisphere genotypes of M. galloprovincialis, and hybrids of northern M. galloprovincialis with introduced M. edulis, from the Northern Hemisphere. So far, purebred populations of M. edulis have not been reported from the Southern Hemisphere (Westfall and Gardner 2010)
