Genetic studies of Mytilus mussels in the Southern Hemisphere indicate that they include a Southern Hemisphere genotype of M. galloprovincialis derived from pre-human natural dispersal, recently introduced Northern Hemisphere genotypes of M. galloprovincialis and hybrids of northern M. galloprovincialis with introduced M. edulis, from the Northern Hemisphere. So far, purebred populations of M. edulis have not been reported from the Southern Hemisphere (Westfall and Gardner 2010)
