Invasion Description

Type Locality: Auckland/New Zealand (1909, Gosliner 1995)

Currently, two species of Philine are recognized as intorudced to the West Coast of North America. The identity of the earliest, most widespread species invader, here considered to be P. auriformis, was disputed (Rudman1999). Tentatively, we will follow Gosliner (1995) and Behrens (2004) in treating this species as P. auriformis from New Zealand. Recent geneitc work has identified the second invader as P. orientalis.
