Invasion Description

1st Records: San Diego/CA/San Diego Bay (1987, McDonald and Koehn 1988, molecular survey; McDonald et al. 1991); Los Angeles/CA/Los Angeles Harbor (McDonald and Koehn 1988, molecular survey; McDonald et al. 1991, molecular survey)

The actual invasion date is unknown. This species was first detected in molecular surveys, which began in 1985 (McDonald and Koehn 1988; McDonald et al. 1991)

San Diego/CA/San Diego Bay (1987, McDonald and Koehn 1988; McDonald et al. 1991); San Diego/CA/San Diego Bay (1992; Geller et al. 1994; Suchanek et al. 1997); Chula Vista Boat Ramp, San Diego/CA/San Diego Bay (Cohen et al. 2002)

Regional Impacts

Ecological ImpactCompetition
Competition with, and nearly complete replacement of, native M. trossulus occurred in San Diego Bay, possibly in the 1940s (Carlton 1979; McDonald et al. 1991; Suchanek et al. 1997). See the discussion of the bioregion for details.
 
Ecological ImpactHybridization
Hybridization between M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus was probably widespread during the early invasion and replacement of M. trossulus. See the discussion for the bioregion for details.
