Invasion Description

1st Records: Melbourne/Victoria/Port Philip Bay (1994-2010, Westfall and Gardner 2010, 37° 53.532' S 144° 54.910' E, northern M. galloprovincialis, northern M. galloprovincialis X M. edulis, southern M. galloprovincialis); Victoria/Womboyn River (1994-2010, Westfall and Gardner 2010, 37° 15.033' S 149° 57.556' E);  Molecular analyses indicate that most of these populations were derived from Pleistocene migrations of M. galloprovincialis and or M. edulis and represent one or more undescribed species (Daguin and Borsa 2000; Hilbish et al. 2000). However, purebred mussels of the Northern Hemisphere genotype, and hybrids between the northern genotype and M. edulis (M. galloprovincialis X M. edulis) were found at Melbourne and Womboyn River (Westfall and Gardner 2010).
