Invasion Description

1st Record: North Bay Reserve, near Allyn/WA/North Bay, Puget Sound (9/1954, 5000 M. mercenaria + 500 M. campechensis and 2000 hybrids, from hatchery in Milford CT, Chew 2001). This was the first of a series of plantings by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. None were successful (Chew 2001)

Geographic Extent

North Bay Reserve, near Allyn/WA/North Bay, Puget Sound (9/1954, 5000 M. mercenaria + 500 M. campechensis and 2000 hybrids, Chew 2001); Whidbey Island/WA/Penn Cove, Puget Sound (5/1958, 4.5 bushels of small clams from Maine planted, Chew 2001); near Olympia/WA/Oyster Bay (9/1958, 3 bushels of small clams from Maine planted, Chew 2001); Lopez Island/WA/Mud Bay (4/19/59, an unknown quantity from Maine, planted. A few clams were recovered one year after planting, but none were found subsequently.); WA/Case Inlet, Puget Sound (6/1959, 1.5 bushels of small clams, ~ 50 lbs adult clams planted, Chew 2001); British Columbia/Boundary Bay (5/24/1996, personal communication to Whitman Miller, Miller 2000; Forsyth and Forsyth 2001, a single specimen)
