Cotula coronopifolia (Brass Buttons) is a small plant (to 305 mm) of the Aster family (Asteracae), somewhat resembling a dandelion. It is considered native to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. It is salt-tolerant, and often found in salt or brackish shores and wetlands, as well as freshwater. Seeds only float for a short time, but could be distributed by birds. It is widely introduced in the world, including Europe, South America, India, and China, probably by dry ballast. It was collected in San Francisco Bay in 1863, Coos County, Oregon in 1887, Puget Sound in 1912, and southern Alaska in the 1930s. It is a widespread non-native plant, but does not seem to be regarded as a highly aggressive invader.
