The Tautog (Tautoga onitis) is a marine fish of the wrasse family (Labridae), native to the Northwest Atlantic from Nova Scotia to South Carolina. Adult fish reach 910 mm. They feed on invertebrates including mussels, other bivalves, and crustaceans. Tautogs are highly regarded food fish. Twenty-three fish from Massachusetts were introduced near Oakland in 1874, and 566 near the Farallon Islands in 1897. Tautogs did not become established in California. An introduction to Bermuda was also unsuccessful.
